Programmer Question
I cannot enable rewrites on the test site I have on my Mac. The rewrite module is enable, as it appears in the list of modules returned by apachectl -M; the directives for rewriting URLs are present, and commented out; the file .htaccess is present in the directory, and it is accessible from the user associated with the Apache threads.
As the directory containing the php scripts is a sub-directory of the root directory, I tried to copy the .htaccess file in the root directory, or to use the directive RewriteBase, but none of them worked.
